In recent years, we have noticed a lot of security breaches and scams happening around us through the technologies we are using in our day-to-day lives. Spying through mobile and laptop cameras is common. Thus, many MacBook users use clip-on or sliding-mechanism plastic camera covers on their laptops.
But, Apple released an official advisory that Mac users should avoid closing their MacBooks with the MacBook camera cover on! Yes, when you close the laptop lid with the plastic part fitted on the camera, it might damage the display. The tolerance between the screen and body is very tightly designed and the cover will make contact in between.
Instead, Apple suggested that users should trust the green light beside the camera and make sure that they decide which app should use the camera from the system preferences. It also suggests that the camera is designed in a way, it won’t become active unless the green light turns on.
And, if you are forced to use a MacBook camera cover, then make sure you use:
- The camera cover is not thicker than printer paper (0.1mm)
- Avoid covers that leave adhesive behind
- If using a cover thicker than 0.1 mm, then remove it before closing the laptop
Plus, you can always check which applications have access to your camera from settings and change it!
